GTalk - showing as offline to others

Hi,

Just checking if this is an issue or just a thing that happens, but:

* Logged *out* of google chat services via browser - whether google offers me hangouts or the old chat system seems irrelevant
* Logged on and chatting via the jabber plugin with the "Google Talk!" option
* I'm showing as offline to google contacts even though I'm talking to them & have my status set to Online

So is this a misconfiguration, or is the old gchat implementation just not passing status to hangout users? did a search here, didn't find any complaints. If I log in via a google web service I get myself in my online contacts list and it's status doesn't reflect me at all, so it'd be nice if it worked properly.

Unfortunately that thread was about the opposite to my problem - I can see my gchat contacts' status just fine, whether they're using hangouts or old gchat. *They* can't see *my* status at all - I just show as offline unless I use a google chap applet in a browser ( including the old chat applet ). If that is caused by the same thing, then fine - however given I can see them it seems like a one-way issue ( or my messing something up ) & not just google unlinking the systems.
