Update from Miranda IM 0.8.1 to Miranda NG

Hey,

Ive been away from Miranda for a very long time and decided to revive my old Miranda IM installation. I tried to upgrade from Miranda IM 0.8.1 to the latest Miranda NG version but it doesnt work.
I Installed the x64 version of IM Updater but when I launch Miranda IM it does not load the plugin. It does not appear in the plugin list and there is no option to "check for updates" in the main menu.

Then I tried the x32 of the Updater but during the start the client "crashes" leaving a crashlog saying: "Likely cause of the crash plugin: Plugin updater". However the client somehow launches. Now the option to "check for updates" appears. When I click on it a message appears saying "update checking already started". Unfortunately nothing more happens.

What might be the cause of these problem? What can I do to get the update working?

My intention to use this update tool was to get my database with all my settings, contacts and history working with the latest version of Miranda NG. I thougt that there might be some kind of conversion neccessary to get the database working with Miranda NG and that I need the update tool fot this.
However, I noticed that I simply had to copy my database to the fresh Miranda NG installation. Now I got my contacts and history and it is working with Miranda NG.
Because obviously many things have changed since Miranda 0.8.1 I prefere to install all the plugins manually from the available plugin list to get a more or less clean installation.
So I think I dont need a solution for my initial problem with the update tool.

 Well, I will still try to find out why it crashes.

Please take a look here, if you used dbx_mmap_sa.dll to encrypt your profile,decrypt it before you update.

I would still recommand IM Updater, it will replace all plugins with their equivalents,if they exist. Will try to fix it.

Wishmaster, when someone updates from IM updater - he is automatically updates to 0.94.9 first, then even with encrypted profile when he enters the key - MMAP driver takes over, SA is banned and PluginUpdater window is presented again with update to latest stable.  The wiki page you showed is for NG users that updated their pre-0.94.7 version with SA driver and encrypted profile to the latest stable.

crumbler, i found a solution for you - it does crash on 0.8.1, but it doesn't on 0.8.27, so you can update only miranda32.exe from this archive (backup your Miranda first to be on a safe side) and try again - IM Updater shouldn't crash. I just did all that and Miranda IM stopped crashing and updated beautifully.

watcher, in that case would be wise to add some error message when trying to load IM_Updater in Miranda IM older than 0.8.27 (or similar) :-)

watcher, thank you. i tried to update from 0.8.27 and the update to NG worked.
This should be mentioned in the wiki because it says that "Miranda IM v0.8 or higher" is required.

However, I already tried the other option. I simply compied my old database to a fresh portable Miranda NG. Of course I lost all the plugins, but I prefere to install the ones I need seperately as there were many plugins in my old installation which I dont need anymore.
So far everything works fine. But do you think that different things happen to the profil when prefering one option over the other?

Well - there are 3 ways of solving it

1 - fixing PU that it can work on any 0.8 build
2 - finding on which 0.8 build it starts working (dunno who has a time to figure that out)
3 - stick to 0.8.27 as minimum version for updater (altough i am sure that all the 0.8.2* will work)

Same for 0.8.2 to 0.8.8. Although it did not crash, but the x64 version of the updater does not appear in plugin list, but i guess this is because the installation is x32?
The x32 updater does appear in the plugin list but nothing happens when checking for updates.

It works for 0.8.9, 0.8.10 and I guess for all higher versions

EDIT:
Ok, only thing that happens when updating from version 0.8.9 (EDIT2: and also when using 0.8.27) is that Miranda crashes* as soon as it has installed the last updated file.
However, after restarting Miranda you seem to have a fully updated Miranda NG 0.94.9 which then can be updated to the lastest Miranda NG 0.95.3 without problems.

*When it crashes a Windows error appears telling me that Miranda32 is not working anymore. But I guess this is more a problem of Windows itself and not of Miranda because everytime I closed my old Miranda installation this error appeared.

Fixed! Now early 0.8 cores update without crash! Binaries of IM Updater updated too.

Remember - x64 plugins are for x64 Miranda core, not for windows x64.
