I got v0.96, the portable edition.
how do I go about installing an english spell checker?

I can't find any documentation of a such.

What do you mean by "portable edition"? Do you have PluginUpdater installed? Anyway - what you need is a Spellchecker plugin. Also read this on adding plugins.
