I have just googled some guy developing WhatsApp Web plugin for Pidgin (https://github.com/hoehermann/purple-gowhatsapp). It is powered by go-whatsapp (https://github.com/hoehermann/purple-gowhatsapp) package which implements a reverse-engineered WhatsApp Web API (https://github.com/sigalor/whatsapp-web-reveng). Unlike old whatsapp protocol, which worked directly with server and had ban problems, a web version requieres a running whatsapp on your phone/emulator (just like desktop version), thus making it a more promising undertaking. Just wanted to share this information in case someone would like to develop it.
