After upgrading Miranda to 0.95.5 and entering password my encrypted database was converted to new format.
Then password was automatically removed. When I set it again Miranda is asking me for password on start again.
But database is no more encrypted, I can easily see plain text of my conversations in text viewer/editor.

You should enable Total encryption in Options -> Database
Standard encryption doesn't encrypt history as described in Options -> Database

I did it and my profile grew from 50 to 200 MB... And it is still not encrypted.
Miranda 0.95.8.19948
Dbx_mdbx.dll 0.95.8.7
Dbx_mmap.dll 0.95.8.1

Try to:
- switch to Standard (apply settings)
- restart Miranda
- remove password
- restart Miranda (now you have unencrypted profile without password request)
- switch to Total (apply settings)
- restart Miranda
- set up password
- restart Miranda
- сompact profile (option in Main menu -> Database)
