I haven't used Miranda for like two years or something, and after I updated it today, the message window appears completely broken. This is not how I remember it looked before. There were more icons and the layout was completely different.
edit: When I open options->message sessions, none of the settings can be changed. I uncheck some of the checkboxes, press ok, and when I open options again, they are back in the original state.

I downloaded the development version today and it's the same :( Actually worse, because some more icons above the message window are missing.
I don't use tabSRMM if that's of any importance.

first ensure that your Core/StdMsg.dll has the same version/build with the core.
then these Unloadable Plugins (9): - you don't update them? if not, you better remove old modules, cause any attempt to load old shit can result to unpredictable complications. never update plugins manually, allow PluginUpdater to do that for you

I see what the problem is - I only donwnloaded the archive from the site and didn't think about plugins. I have since noticed I can configure the updater to work with dev versions and fixed it. I haven't used Miranda for over two years :)

The message window is still weird though - basically the same problem. I just don't know :(

SRMM window isn't weird, it was completely redesigned by merging StdMsg & StdChat windows together + applying new UI classes + adding toolbar icons (you can tune them now in Options - Messages - Toolbar as you wish)

Ok, but why are there two fields where I can type in? Or in other words, the message window being seemingly divided into two.
Actually, I can put cursor in the upper one, but when I start typing, it switches to the lower one.
That's the whole problem here.

The message window on my wife's PC still has some sort of visual problem. It is a minor thing, but I made sure I configured both Mirandas exactly the same.
There's some shadow or part of the border or something missing at the bottom of the "editor" field.
Can you guess what might be the cause?

It's just a cosmetic bug, but it's annoying.

Look on your second screenshot, you also don't have right and bottom border for those fields. The reason why you can see those fields clearly there is that the rest of the window has different color. So why your wife's msg window looks different? Well, it has tabs. Background color of tabs (as you can see) is white. So you have white background and white fields.
So what to do?
One solution would be to set different color for message area. Go to "Options -> Fonts and colors (under 'Customize' branch)", choose "Message log" in the middle list and change "Color/background" for your needs. Some very light gray should be enough.

Actually... it's still broken. I disabled tabs, and the grey area between message log and message window is still white.
edit: it appears to be a background over the entire message window including the send button. But I can't find it in the options.

Make sure your Miranda is updated (using PluginUpdater) and provide some screenshot because mine test_case looks like this

Hm, mystery solved. I was connecting to the other PC remotely, and thay grey area I thought was missing is actually there. Bah.
The icon in top left corner (the one that shows status) is not showing though. Would you happen to know if this can be changed somewhere?

Do you mean that one which is a sun on my previous screenshot and has "User menu" tooltip? Do you just have gap there? I mean button with mentioned tooltip but without icon.

Octopuss, as ghazan confirmed this icon should reflect proto status so the question is: Do you see those icons in contact list? Are you talking about not seeing it remotely or at all? Is it ICQ right? Can you see status icons for that account in options (see screenshot)?

Yes, I can see all icons for ICQ in that window.
Interestingly, when I come online, the icon appears. When I go offline, it disappears instead of changing to offline version.

It's not really related to the topic anymore, but when I set either of the clients to invisible, they are showing as online in the contact list on the other end.
