Title: When did ICQ start to save conversations online?
Post by: oldnerd2 on 06 02 2024, 20:21:14
Hi miranda experts, maybe you can help.

Early ICQ was said to not have an online message history: https://web.archive.org/web/20060427211721/http://www.icq.com/help/view_faq.php?faq_id=4508

On reddit there is however user who said they found messages online from 2007 or 2008 when logging into their old account. They said to have used miranda with OTR.

That faq is still there in 2008: https://web.archive.org/web/20080502123946/http://www.icq.com/help/view_faq.php?faq_id=450

And there was:

https://web.archive.org/web/20120702192345/http://www.icq.com/support/icq_7/messages/is_my_message_history_saved_on_the_icq_servers/en

Maybe some of you still have their ICQ; can you say how old the messages are that miranda fetches from the cloud, or that you see in web icq? Does miranda even see more old messages than web icq displays?

Now question to the ICQ experts: When did ICQ start to backup chat history in the cloud? Or is anything specific known of miranda uploading history?

Do we have any reasonable argument for why even much older messages could be present online?

The poster says to have used miranda, and tells about 2007.
